Symbian UI Philosophy

  • The purpose of the design philosophy is to be a guiding vision for the Symbian Foundation User Interface platform work
  • As the Symbian Foundation design philosophy we suggest three high level principles or goals: Simplicity, Predictability and Efficiency. For each of these we outline the tools for reaching that goal.custom research papers

Simplicity When designing it is important to keep in mind that the simpler a solution is the better. Ease of use will come from a good visibility and with few but important actions in each screen. Additionally the fewer screen are needed to realize a flow or application the better. Any advanced features shall therefore be hidden from basic users but shall be easily found by more advanced users. It shall be easily distinguishable what is content and what are the most obvious actions in each screen.

Predictability Predictability is important for making a user feel at home with a design. It is reached by applying consistency in the design, within and between applications, where feasible. Also by taking into account the users task and context in mind.

Efficiency Using the phone should be very efficient, giving the user a sense of control. The user should be able to quickly perform the current task flow, without the need to look for obvious commands or stopping at unnecessary confirmations. This can be benchmarked by counting number of clicks to accomplish core user cases.

  • There are a number of usability standards that the Symbian UI Council could look into and select the best examples for inspiration or to follow more directly
  • The Symbian UI Council can set up a working group with the objective of creating a short list of usability standards
  • Adherence to usability standards will help us fulfil the objective of a leading UI platform

UI Council

The Symbian UI Council invites and reviews descriptions of new user interface elements and develops guidelines to help ensure high quality device user experiences.
