Symbian^1 (pronounced Symbian one) is the commercially licensed code that forms the basis for the platform. It incorporates Symbian OS and S60 5th Edition (S60 5.0), which is built on Symbian OS v9.4.

The platform is available as a free download in a series of Kits, targeted primarily towards either application developers (who create applications "on top" of the Symbian platform), or device creators (who use the Symbian platform to create devices and/or develop code to contribute to or complement the platform).

The software in the Symbian platform is sub-divided into Technology Domains, each of which consists of a number of individual packages. Further details on the software structure can be found here.

Developing on the Symbian^1 platform

If you want to develop applications for Symbian^1 devices the Symbian C++ Quick Start guide will help get you started. It shows you how to get the development tools (e.g. IDE) and set up your development environment. It then shows you how to create a skeleton application using Carbide.c++ and UI designer, and how to get it up and running on both the Symbian Emulator and on the device; the whole process takes just a few minutes!
