Symbian Stammtisch/Stammtisch Ideas
From Symbian Developer Community
To every Stammtisch we bring a topic and a set of questions to inspire discussion. We collect responses and ideas, and select the best five ideas from each event on this page. The ideas are posted (or located if they already exist) in the Ideas site, and linked from here.

Measuring our success
How to avoid chasing last year's trends
Areas to focus on:
- Provide social networking frameworks
- Enable location aware technology
- Provide VoIP over 3G/4G
- Provide a framework for mobile payment
- Clarify UI roadmap for Symbian^4 onwards
- Ensure that Symbian is suitable for a wide range of phones, cheap to expensive
Media perception of Symbian
- Emphasize that Symbian Foundation specifies the development framework, standards compliance, architecture model and device certification which provides easy portability and ensures compatibility.
- Tell the world that the community is there to help you, and Symbian Foundation will help you find your way in the community.
- Make sure SEE 2010 has real technology demos. Working code and hardware integrations.
- Make sure that all Symbian phones, no matter price point, have a similar user experience even though feature sets differ.
- We need a special logo and catchphrase like "Intel inside" so people can easily identify Symbian phones. Maybe "Symbian at heart"?
Bridging the gap between the mobile web and native applications
- A connection setting for "I have flat rate data" that disables the connection popup.
- Make a list of thesis ideas relating to Symbian and our community.
- Add a data quota indicator, like the battery strength.
- Work with health industry to find out how Symbian can be used in medical devices.
- Ensure good BONDI support.
Acting on community ideas
- Voting on the ideas site works well
- To kick-start ideas we need champions with formal responsibility
- Build momentum around a small number of ideas and implement to lead the way (Wild Ducks project)
- Ask the board to allow 5-10% of staff time to lead ideas implementation
- Ensure recognition, visible on website, to work as credentials for people in their careers (Kudos project)
How do we engage the community?
- Create a web/wiki page with desired contributions and let the community help fill gaps
- Interface with universities (particularly South Bank University)
- Annual awards for best contributions
- Create a lab in the Symbian Foundation building
- Provide tools to verify contribution quality
