Review of October workshop actions and progress

Vision & Strategy - Facilitator: Mark

The notes, actions & material from the October Vision & Strategy workshop and follow up call in Novmeber can be found here:

The outcome of the session on January 13th is below:

Outcome of progress and way forward:

  • RCW1291009_1 Innovation: Create a nimble environment that permits innovation
  • Updated material: Creating Nimble Environment that Permits Innovation update on 20100113
    • Petri Poikolainen
    • Current status:
      • Wordpress blog active: http://poikolainen.wordpress.com/ Daily readers but few comments.
      • Discussion threads in LinkedIn, Facebook and SF forums. Only a few comments received
      • Lack of input means that Petri has offered to try and narrow the scope himself (with help from RC?)
    • How do we get a targeted discussion from interesed parties or companies?
    • It was suggested it may be worth exploring what the Eclipse Foundation does or what ideas have been generated there.
    • It was suggested getting involved in the MWC BoFs (Birds of a Feather).
    • Suggested additional actions: Increase participation, more networking, spread the word, look at tools that enable innovation

Action RCW1130110_1: Petri to suggest how the above can be handled

  • RCW1291009_2 Cost & Speed: Fast TTM
    • Pierre-Henri Maitre/Philippe Gaudillat -> Mark S to present material provided by STE
    • No updated material was provided by STE. However, it agreed that this action should be combined with the following one (Predictability) since there is a natural tie in. Pierre-Henri had provided the following comment via email on 11th Jan 2010:
      • Regarding the action taken by Philippe, it is also linked with the action taken by Laurent. We propose to have a call with Laurent and merge these 2 actions after the RC of this week. Laurent described during the call in November a pragmatic approach compared to the theorical approach of Philippe. I think we can combine both if Laurent agreed (we didn't check with him).
      • Action RCW1130110_2: Pierre-Henri & Laurent to propose how actions RCW1291009_2 & RCW1291009_3 will be combined.

  • RCW1291009_3 Cost & Speed: Predictability: High quality and on schedule
    • Laurent Le Gal
    • Material:
    • As mentioned for the Fast TTM action, these actions will be combined.
    • Laurent identified a number of tasks (see material) to be "driven by the SF RC community to deliver best-in-class OSS in a timely manner". The comments on each of these are:
      • Task 1 - Improve S^n release content & plan visibility to the SF community. Action RCW1130110_3: Laurent to talk to FRC about Key Feature requirements - what we need to see and when.
      • Task 2 - Define entry criteria for KF contributions. Define a level of testing for contributions. Fred Maurel has provided a proposal to be reviewed with the TWG (see material).
      • Task 3 - Deliver an Integration Release Plan covering KFs. This is already being done by Delivery Management in the SF (see http://developer.symbian.org/wiki/index.php/Integration_Plan)
      • Task 4 - Deliver TPIP dependencies for KFs. The dependencies are not obvious yet. Add the dependencies to KFs. What about basic TPIP needs for phne/device creation? How is that captured? Need somene from the technology team to provide input and then put out for review by device creators. Action RW1130110_4: Anders to shoot a first proposal over next 2 weeks for other release council chairs to complement. (Laurent noted that TI Architecture Council representative & Daniel Rubio (AC chair) is driving another action on defining which SW packages are required for VP-demo (VP standing for Vice-President to get SF buzz at VP level): Laurent suggested this should be used in addition to minimal TPIP to get the S^3 to-be-tested product configuration defined).
      • Task 5 - Deliver and support test framework and test suite to community for community to improve over time. This is being managed by the TWG.
      • Task 6 - Publish Quality Metrics. This is already being done by Delivery Management in the SF. (See http://developer.symbian.org/wiki/index.php/Quality_Metrics/Metric_Snapshot_Archives)
      • Task 7 - Define detailed test quality criteria for FC & Stable milestones. Action RW1130110_5: Mark to drive Test WG to deliver to the RC a S^3 Test Plan and associated execution status towards the S^3 Feature complete milestone. The plan content suggested to include: 1/ supported test reference environments; 2/ test cases brief description constituted of package tests and use cases tests with mapping to test reference environments; 3/ resources requirements (HW, people, SW,…).

  • RCW1291009_4 Collaboration: Contributions
    • Rauno Uusitalo & Riku Mettala
      • Victor stated that the Kudos Programme covers not just code contributions but also forum input, test cases, etc. That is, it is all-encompassing. THis ties into action RCW2291009_1 Put together a kudos program to be reviewed by Petri (Digia).
      • Action RW1130110_6: Rauno to check how the contribution process works for Maemo. How do they request and 'reward' specific contributions?

  • RCW1291009_5 Visibility: Of success of transparency -> continuous improvement of transparency
    • Chandra Narayanasamy
      • Access to information is one of the challenges here. How do we find what's relevant amongst the all the information available. What information is needed?, who needs what?
      • Action RW1130110_7: Chandra N to create a survey to be sent to the RC from which recommendations will be made as appropriate. Target w/o Feb 12th.

Running a Release. Facilitator: Victor
