Review and Approval of Charter Change Requests

VP briefly outlined the RC charter and the outstanding changes for approval.

A discussion on RC communication identified the following main channels:

  • Forum
  • Email list (using Mailman)
  • Release Council discussion group

ACTION – Victor to email requesting approval of council Change Requests.

Ratification of Release Model and process

VP led a review of the release model material

Discussion of the release model identified some key focus areas:

  • How do we map time onto generic model (1 in Q1 and 1 in Q3)
  • Is 5 concurrent releases too many?
  • What does the hardening phase mean?
  • How do we ensure releases have consisitent quality if some releases are not really used.

ACTION – Victor/Jim to clarify grant-back time for innovations for SFL and EPL.

ACTION – Jim/Victor clarify the difference between VT4 and functionally complete.

ACTION – Victor to distribute the release model details for ratification.

Discussion: RC priorities for the first six months (see updated slide in RC_april.ppt pack)

VP presented a proposal for the RC's priorities for the next six months. The RC broadly accepted the proposal with some modifications.

ACTION – Victor/Riku distribute existing Symbian and S60 Milestone definitions with SF milestones

ACTION – Victor to initiate the following offline actions 1) Milestone definitions – take to forums 2) Quality Metrics – start working group for this.

Update from the foundation Delivery Management Team (Jim Clarke)

JC shared the progress of the ramp-up of the Symbian delivery team and the plans for the initial products and services.

ACTION - Victor/Jim to validate that R&D license can be used to perform operator testing

Discussion on frequency of reporting for showstoppers on open releases. The number of kits makes a complex story which is potentially confusing.

S^2 & S^3 contribution plan update (Nokia)

RM shared the status and plans for Nokia's initial contribution.

The release naming convention was discussed. Numbering does not start from scratch to reflect the asset in the market

Initially details and metrics of showstoppers will be shared in Bugzilla.

RM clarified that the status presented applies to the Nokia configuration i.e. with different hardware, third party ip and differentiating software. It will be necessary to ensure asset can work on the Symbian reference hw as well as Nokia hw.

The RC expressed thanks for the material and the spirit of openness.

S^2 & S^3 upcoming timelines, incl PDK, builds and Functionally Complete dates (Victor Palau)

VP shared the current view of the release plans and package roadmaps.

This planning view will not be appropriate once we stabilise on a regular Timebox pattern as the plan/forecast/actual should always be the same.

We need at least a draft plan to approve by next face2face – as indicated by the red broken lines, the current view is a top down estimate.

Some package backlogs (aka package roadmaps) are available on the wiki site (page structure is non-intuitive, suggest searching for “package backlog”).

Tools Release status update (Victor Palau)

The RC agreed that the tools releases were of great importance and we should manage time to ensure they get full attention.

ACTION - Victor to clarify if CDB, CBR are command line tools or eclipse plug-ins.

Closing remarks

Next meeting The RC agreed that it may need more frequent face to face meetings to speed up team building. What is our infrastructure to share documents.

Next Meetings

  • 20th May – early morning 8am-10am GMT.
  • 23rd June – Face to face in London.

Post Meeting Note

Jim added an action that was not captured in the original minutes:

ACTION Riku to clarify if all Symbian 9.4 functionality is available standalone with no dependencies on S60.

Email response from Riku: In general, those components are included in the current source code asset contributed to the foundation (i.e., Symbian^2) unless there are, e.g., legal restrictions like 3rd party restrictions. In the future, the source code should remain accessible at some part of the SW repository although the code can be thought to be deprecated as there are no plans to maintain and further develop those components by Nokia.
