Direct UI is part of a proposal to replace the existing set of S60 'Avkon' UI elements with a new application framework based on Orbit and Qt from Symbian^4 onwards. It also involves implementing modernized interaction and navigation logic for touch screen devices, describing how Orbit widgets and the Qt framework can be best used on devices.

It is currently only a proposal so until it gets approval you can find more information here.
